This was an exciting game played in a good spirit between two large and evenly-matched squads. The enormous 4G pitch gave lots of space for running and, despite the wet weather, both teams tried to spread the ball. St Brendans were first to score, Harry Y pouncing on a mistake by North Bristol at a line-out on their own 5m line. Harry S and Jonathan made some sniping runs down the wings in the first half although we tended to drift sideways and the North Bristol defence covered across well to keep us from scoring. We put the opposition under a lot of pressure in the first half, although North Bristol’s tall centre broke our defensive line several times and looked threatening; Benji and Harry Y did well to stop him when he was otherwise clean through on one occasion. Things were very competitive in the scrum and North Bristol made things difficult for us here but their line out worked less well and Harry S scored in the corner for our second try after an intercepted pass from an opposition throw in. In the second half, we weathered a period of sustained pressure from North Bristol after they kicked deep into our half from a penalty and Felix managed to stop a strong, straight run from a North Bristol centre before the opposition backs then made a mistake and lost the initiative. We didn’t always make it easy for ourselves, choosing to run the ball out from our own try line before losing possession and allowing North Bristol’s skilful left winger to score in the opposite corner, making the score 15-5. The feeling on the touch line where I was standing was that James B had a particularly strong game and seemed to enjoy his unfamiliar role in the forwards. Overall, it was a great game to watch and well done to all the players for the effort and skill they showed.
