- St Brendan's Under 9's - The season so far ....
It was always going to be difficult to beat every team
we played into submission, as we did last season, but we
still have a very strong squad and have won some tough
fixtures. Our squad this season has increased to 26!
Which is fantastic. The boys come from a number of
different schools and yet gel together brilliantly, they
are a really friendly bunch and we have great fun on
Sundays. The seasons first game was against Chipping
Sodbury and I made sure all the boys played some part in
the fixture (which is difficult when we have a squad of
26 and it is only 7 a side!) We won convincingly in very
heavy rain.
Our first ever defeat followed against the very well
organised Old Bristolians, in a very close game that
could have gone either way. The boys then had the chance
to play Clifton for the first time and played
fantastically well in winning the first game but
unfortunately we lost the second game so honours were
even. We entered two teams into the Old Bristolians
Festival in November, St Brendan's Exiles and St
Brendan's Crusaders. There were some very strong sides
playing and the Crusaders did very well in winning and
drawing 2 of their 3 games and finishing runners up in
their league.
The Exiles won their league scoring too many tries to
count! So they were through to the final against the
hosts Old B's. This was a chance for Old B's to gain
revenge for the pasting they were given by us at the
Peter Pulin Tournament last season. Unfortunately we
lost a thrilling game 7-6, but the boys walked away with
their heads held high as it was a superb performance and
no more could have been asked of them.
The boys quickly put the defeat behind them and the
following week they stuffed Avonmouth at Coombe Dingle.
2008 was rounded off in great style when the parents
accepted the challenge of a game of tag from their sons.
The game was taken very seriously by all involved and
their were lots of individual scores to settle. The game
finished all square and with full contact, in fact the
referee was upended at the end by a great tackle from an
unnamed parent! (Remember I know who you are and where
you live!!!!!)
